This has been a long and complicated story, a road with many twists and turns. Longer still was to be its conclusion, but we can move rapidly ahead.

Shortly after the judgement, Paris decided to attend the annual games held in the city of Troy. Here he was recognized by his father, King Priam, and welcomed back into the palace. No longer a shepherd but a prince, he sailed to Sparta where he cynically took advantage of the king’s hospitality to steal away with his wife. Although the jealous Hera sent a storm to try to stop them, Paris and Helen sailed safely back to Troy. The Trojan people fell in love with the Greek queen the moment they saw her. Soon she was delivered of three sons: Bunomus, Aganis and Idaeus. For a time, they were happy.

But Paris had been deceived by Aphrodite and had underestimated the wrath of Menelaus. The King of Sparta was enraged not only by the theft of his wife but by the underhand method in which it had been accomplished – while Paris was a guest in his own house. Helped by his brother Agamemnon, he set about raising an army the size of which had never been seen nor even dreamed of before. He began with all the kings and princes who had once been the suitors of Helen, the same men who had sworn to come to his aid. To these he added just about every great warrior alive: Odysseus, Achilles (the son of Peleus and Thetis), Nestor, Diomedes . . . and many more.
